“Get… the fuck… gone.” Jake leaned in close and growled those words at daddy and he actually turned and left, unbelievable. Was it over? It couldn’t be over.
“Come here baby.” Jake kept his eyes on the door as he reached back to pull me around. I plastered myself to his chest and finally gave in to the shakes.
“It’s okay precious girl I’ve got you.” Mindy came up behind me and wrapped her arms around both of us and Jake extended his hug to hold her too. I felt safely cocooned between my two
stalwart warriors.

Mom snuck out of her room a few minutes later. “Is he gone?” I released the girls and went to her drawing her still shaking form into my arms. “He’s gone mom. You don’t have to be afraid
because you’re not staying here. When I leave here I’m taking you with me.” She looked up at me about to argue but I didn’t give her a chance. “You did what I asked you to?” I spoke to
Mindy over her head. “Yeah the movers will be here tomorrow.” Mom looked back and forth between us. “Movers?” I knew she was going to have a hard time leaving, this is where she’d spent
her life with dad but there was no way I was leaving her here alone. And since I had no intentions on coming back here again this was the only option.
“Yeah I had Mindy call a moving company to come get your stuff. I know I should’ve talked it over with you first mom but you’re just too stubborn when it comes to this place. You know
you can’t stay here and you damn sure can’t work for that…for Willoughby again.” Mindy decided to choose that moment to show her little hellion side. “Oh mom you should’ve seen it, Jake
handed him his ass. No hard feelings Jackie, but your dad is a dick. Jake is the champ woot.” She walked around the room like Rocky until mom curtailed her celebration. “Mindy Elizabeth
Summers you watch you mouth, whatever he may be he’s still the father of your new sister in law and no matter how awful a person may be their children still loves them.” Mindy looked at
Jacqueline who was once again clinging to my neck. “Sorry Jackie I wasn’t thinking, don’t mind me and my big mouth.” I hugged her tighter wishing only to be alone with her so I could
love her out of her misery but there was still a lot to be done.
“Now mom I don’t want you to worry I’ve got it all worked out, I’ve got a place for you and Mindy already. The movers will just be taking grandma’s furniture and your clothes and stuff
like that, everything else has already been taken care of.” I tried to let go of my wife but she wasn’t having it so I held on as I walked us both to the couch in the living room. “I
don’t know son, you just got married and everything you need your space.” I sat Jacqueline down on the couch and turned to my mother and sister. “Come over here and sit down both of
you.” I made room on the couch for mom on the other side of me, and Mindy sat in the side chair. “I bought a house. It’s a nice place in a nice area, mom you can finally retire, you’re
fifty years old but you’ve been working since the age of thirteen that’s more than enough. Now I’ve got pictures of the house if you want to see it but you’re going.” I asked Mindy to
get her laptop so that I could cue up the virtual tour videos I’d had made of the new house. “It’s one of those mother daughter type things, mom you’ll have your side and we’ll have
ours. I was thinking Mindy could take the condo if she can prove that she’s responsible enough to be on her own.” They looked at the pictures and the cooing started. The three of them
deserted me and headed for the table where they could all see together. “Geez big brother how much money do you make anyway this place is huge?” My sister has no tack.
“Enough.” They were busy for the next hour or so looking at rooms and planning decoration parties and what the fuck ever, I was just happy that they were happy. Jacqueline came and sat
beside me with her head on my shoulder. “It’s okay baby we’ll be fine.” She got closer and sniffled into my neck.
“I’m not gonna get to say bye to mom.” I kissed her hair and hugged her close, if she wanted to see her mom no force on earth was going to stop her, not as long as there was breath in my
body. “You want to see her you’ll see her tomorrow before we leave.” She picked up her head and looked at me like I was nuts. “He won’t…”
