“It’s nice to see you again, Remy,” Isaac said.

“You two are both looking well,” Kelly commented.

“Well, I should hope so,” Griff interjected with a smirk. “We’ve had some pretty big news this week.”

“Oh, what’s that?” Isaac asked with a curious furrow of his eyebrows.

Griff looked over at me with a secretive smile and reached out to take my hand. He kissed the back of it and then lifted it into view. “I asked Remy to marry me last night,” he confessed.

Kelly’s head snapped up from where she was looking down at her desk. “W-what?” she exclaimed.

Griff smiled cheerily into the webcam. “I said, Remy and I are engaged!”

“Congratulations you two!” Isaac said. “I’m happy for you.”

“Thanks Isaac,” Griff said happily.

“It’s a good thing we’ll have the opportunity to celebrate in person!” Kelly interjected with a wide, toothy grin.

“W-what?” I asked as my eyebrows drew together. “What do you mean?”

“Well, that’s what I wanted to talk to you about today,” Kelly continued. “Mr. Anderson has invited the two of you to the Anderson Group headquarters in New York!”

“You’re kidding,” I blurted out.

Isaac looked taken back too. His eyes widened and he turned to look directly at Kelly. “I haven’t been informed of any invitation.”

“It was a very recent development, Isaac,” Kelly replied with a slight roll of her eyes. “Mr. Anderson told me that he wanted to meet the power couple who had turned the West Coast into the most profitable branch in the whole business!”

My chest tightened and I could feel anxiety bubbling up inside me. My hand still being held by Griff began to shake and I had to focus all my effort on stopping it before he became suspicious of why I was so nervous. But I just couldn’t believe it. Another out of state visit with Griff... Would my torture never end?

“Now that that’s settled, make sure you book flights for Sunday and I’ll take care of all of the hotel arrangements as well as a schedule for your visit! I’ll be sure to set up plenty of meetings at headquarters to keep you busy while you’re visiting the Big Apple!”

“Okay, that sounds wonderful,” Griff agreed with a breezy attitude. “We’ll get the flights sorted as soon as possible.”

“Great!” Kelly cheered. “Anyway, we still need to catch you up on a few newly implemented corporate policies...”

I couldn’t help it—I zoned out. Whatever the three of them started to discuss after that, I missed it. My mind was too preoccupied with thinking about the upcoming trip. No doubt if Kelly was arranging the accommodation then Griff and I would be stuck sharing a double bed again while we were away. I couldn’t ask for anything different. Kelly would only grow suspicious.

No, there was no way around it. I was going to have to go on this trip with Griff and it was going to kill me.

By the time the meeting came to an end, I’d worked myself into a state. I’d convinced myself that this trip was going to totally destroy me and I had no way of getting out of it. With a quiet and rushed goodbye, I practically ran from Griff’s office back to my desk. Once I reached it, I buried my head in my hands and let out a quiet sigh.

“I don’t think I can handle this anymore,” I whispered to myself. “Everything has spun totally out of control and I...”

I couldn’t even finish that thought. I didn’t want to admit the truth even to myself—my heart was breaking with every moment we spent together. But I didn’t have time to dwell on it. I was still at work and I still had business to attend to. I could try and comfort my broken heart later. So, I lifted my head and unlocked my computer before scrolling through my e-mails.

“Remy?” Shelley’s voice called from close behind me, spooking me.

“Shelley!” I cried as I jumped in my chair. “How long have you been behind me?”

“Long enough,” she replied cryptically. “What’s this?” Her fingers reached out and grabbed a hold of my left hand. She held it up for inspection.

“I think you know what that is,” I replied in a quiet voice.

Shelley rolled her eyes and leaned in close. “Remy, this has gone too far now,” she began in a hushed voice. “You’re clearly upset, is this why?”

“No,” I refuted.

“Then what’s wrong?”

I pulled my hand out of her grip and turned back to my monitor. “Nothing.”

“Don’t lie to me, Remy, I know you,” Shelley pushed like a tenacious bloodhound sniffing for clues. “You’re tired, you’re trying to bury your head in the sand. I can see it on your face. Just tell me what’s going on and maybe I can help.”

I sighed. She wasn’t going to give up until I gave in and I didn’t have the energy to fight. “Griff and I have been invited to Anderson Headquarters in New York. We’re supposed to go away together again,” I explained.
