“So, what do you know?” Shelley asked me, her eyebrows wiggling excitedly.

“What do you mean?” I asked with a frown.

“Come on, Remy, you’re the boss’ assistant. If anybody knows anything, it’s going to be you,” she reasoned as her dark eyes watched me intently for my reaction.

“I haven’t heard anything, Shelley,” I lied as I watched Griff’s office door for any signs of movement.

“You’re lying. You never look me in the eye when you’re lying. I know you, Remy. Spit it out,” she insisted with a playful dig to my ribs.

“Okay, okay,” I finally said as I gave in with a sigh. “Listen, all I know is that there’s going to be a big announcement today, okay?”

Shelley’s eyes lit up. “Oooh, mysterious. That’s exciting.”

I stopped listening to her when I noticed Griff’s door open. He walked out wearing a tight-fitting suit that showed off his gorgeous muscles just like always. I had to try to concentrate on something other than how much I wanted to sit on his handsome face when I realized that Isaac Smith was following behind him. Isaac was from corporate headquarters and I’d met him a few times before, but this time, he was accompanied by a tall, striking woman I didn’t recognize. She was dressed smartly and had short, dark red hair cut into a stylish bob. Instantly, I felt jealousy encapsulate me. She was obviously older and much more serious than I was. Was this the type of woman Griff might like?

Before I could linger on the subject for too long, however, everyone around went silent as Griff finally approached. He stopped in front of us and looked around at everyone, his gray, piercing eyes settling on mine for just a moment, but it was long enough to make me feel weak in the knees. He really did look fantastic today. He looked fit and his hair was slicked back sexily. I worried I might drool.

“Everybody, I’ve gathered you here today because you might have heard some rumors about the company that have been going around the last few weeks,” he began in his strong, confident voice. “Including some rumors about the company being sold. Well, I’m here to let you know that it’s true. The company has been sold to the Anderson Group. They’re known to be quite a powerhouse within the industry of packaging, some of you might have heard of them before. I am quite certain that they will be a good fit for what Enviropak needs right now.”

It was strange. Griff was talking with much more confidence than I thought he would. After all, just a week ago, I’d seen him in the worst mood over the sale of the company. I’d never seen him like that before and it had been a shock, but clearly he’d gotten over whatever had been bothering him about it. Or, he was good at pretending he was over it.

“In light of this development,” he continued, “there are going to be some changes coming, but you don’t have to worry, nobody will be losing their jobs. I’ve been assured of that.”

All around me, people started whispering again. I looked around and sent a few people glares, feeling mad that they’d be so rude when Griff was talking. I didn’t know when I had become so protective of him, but it didn’t feel out of place at all. It was silly, however, Griff was a grown man. He didn’t need my protection.

“Quiet everybody!” Griff exclaimed, holding up his hand to silence everyone. “I recognize that this is big news, but can we save the conversations until afterward, okay? Thank you.” He took a step forward and turned to indicate to his right where Isaac stood. “This is Isaac Smith, some of you might have seen him around the other before, he’s our office’s corporate liaison and he’ll be helping us during the transition.”

I looked Isaac up and down. He was a good-looking man, but he didn’t shine a candle next to Griff. Then again, I always felt that way about guys these days.

“And Kelly Sinclair…” Griff indicated to his left where the redhead stood. “Kelly is the chief of operations for the Anderson Group. I hope you will all make them feel comfortable here with us.”

Isaac waved at us with a friendly smile. “Good morning everybody. I know this news might be a little shocking for some of you, but I hope you’ll all stick with us during the transition. I’m here to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible for everybody involved.”

Kelly nodded. “The Anderson Group is excited to be working with such an excellent bunch of people here at the Seattle division of Enviropak.”

Shelley leaned in close to me then. “She’s pretty,” she commented only adding to the jealousy I felt before. Bile rose in my throat as I imagined how Griff might react to a new woman in the office. He had never looked my way before, so I could be fairly sure that he wasn’t interested in me and yet, the thought of him with anyone else was unbearable.
