I’ve carved her name into the headboard. Finn has decorated it with paintings of woodland scenes in vibrant colors. West has managed to find a shop in town that imports beautiful bed linen and has bought Hallie a set with a woodland fairy pattern. Skye has knitted her daughter a baby pink blanket with all our names woven in and plenty of space to weave in more.
The cot I made for Hallie when she arrived won’t be empty for long.
The warm glow from the cabin up ahead makes me quicken my pace.
The throb of the festive music becomes more audible the closer I get.
My pulse quickens with excitement. I can’t wait to walk through the door and begin to countdown to the holidays with my family. I promised Hallie that I would read her favorite story, “The Three Bears,” at bedtime tonight. Emotion catches in my throat.
Skye’s handmade wreath hangs on the front door.
It’s a tradition I started last year and one that we will continue as our first family holiday tradition. I know we’ll make many more as the years pass.
The warm air, scented with cinnamon and citrus, hits me as I walk through the door. The glow of the fire is a perfect backdrop to everyone as they all turn—laughing at something Hallie says—to welcome me back to them, where I belong.
