“I can give you a trespassing charge,” Silvy added helpfully. “But I think Officer Karen can take care of that while I calm him down. Right, Officer Karen?”

“I can,” Karen confirmed as she walked up.

She was hot.

I’d never seen a woman so beautiful before.

She had the most beautiful mocha-colored skin that was flawless, long, straight brown hair that was put up in an impeccable bun, and her eyes were the color of fall leaves. Brownish gold.

She also, I could tell, had a thing for my brother.

She’d been watching him since they’d arrived, and not in a protective kind of way. Protective like what one cop would do for another cop. She was showing an ‘I’m interested’ kind of watching him.

Oh, brother dearest. Did you know that you had someone beautiful currently pining for you?

“He said it was okay,” Colly grumbled.

“He said what was okay?” Karen asked. “And who said it?”

“Cassius,” she grumbled, staring at him with those stars in her eyes. “I asked if I could come over and hang out sometimes because the beach was peaceful here. And he said yes.”

“I’m sure when he said yes, he meant you and only you,” Karen pointed out. “I can’t see someone like him agreeing to a massive pool party where you take advantage of his kindness once a week and being okay when you did.”

This Karen.

I liked her more and more every second.

“But he said I could come over!” Colly cried out.

That caught Cassius and Silvy’s attention, and Silvy quickly said something to Cassius to get him to pay attention to him, and not the whiny yell coming out of Colly’s mouth.

Colly.

What kind of name was Colly anyway? The jerk.

“He said you, as in singular, could come over,” Karen kept trying. “Not thirty-two of your closest friends.”

I snorted but kept my mouth shut.

“I thought he liked me,” she sighed. “I really thought he did. Then he got all mean.”

I wandered away before I said or did something to cause a brawl.

Drunk girl that I’d knocked out was currently staggering her ass down the beach.

Maybe she’d fall into the water and not be able to get back out again…

“…not really much we can do here if you’re not willing to press any charges,” Silvy was saying as I walked up. “I can remove them from your property but that’s about it. The beach beyond your house is public. They can wander up to that point all day long.”

“You can go make sure they all paid for their day of public parking,” I offered.

Silvy’s eyes came to me and he grinned. “I suppose I can do that. Karen needs an education in all things cop anyway. But listen, you need to monitor this property better. You were right about if something happened here, you’d be held liable. It’s a cruel, bullshit world we live in, and you have money to spare. They’d come after you.”

With that, Silvy clapped me on the back as if I was a man and not his little sister that was a foot and a half shorter, as well as a hundred pounds lighter.

I staggered, and Cassius caught me before I could go tumbling to the ground, which was exactly what Silvy had intended.

The jerk.

Gotta love brothers, right?

“You okay?” Cassius asked.

I nodded, looked down, and found the first thing by my feet that I could throw.

A coconut.

Picking it up, I hefted its weight, then did the only thing a girl who had a brother like Silvy would do.

I threw it.

Of course, it hit him in the head.

He cursed, turned, and looked down at the coconut that was at his feet.

I, on the other hand, looked up at the tree that it’d ‘fallen’ from.

“Karma’s a bitch, bro.” I looked back at him.

I could see him contemplating picking it up and launching it at me.

But he was in uniform, there were still people around, and he couldn’t be acting a fool around them.

He left it on the ground, discreetly flipped me off, then turned to walk over to Colly and Karen.

“The only one I pressed trespassing charges on was Colly,” he murmured. “The others didn’t know they couldn’t be here.”

“Good,” I said. “This wasn’t quite how I expected it to go.”

He grumbled something under his breath, then jerked his head toward the road.

We started walking in silence.

It took Karen and Silvy a minute and a half to pass with Colly.

Colly watched Cassius forlornly as she passed, making me shake my head.

“I think that she’s not all there,” I said. “Because how would someone not understand what just happened today?”

“I don’t know,” he grumbled. “Can you take me home now?”

While I walked to the Jeep and got in, Cassius locked the gate up and jiggled the lock to ensure that it was closed well.

“Tomorrow, I need to get a new lock,” he grumbled. “And a bigger, sturdier gate installed. It’s going to ruin the view.”
