She groaned and tried to nod.

Chapter Seven
Days passed. She couldn’t be sure how many because there was no way to track time or even know if it was day or night. People were always around at all hours. Every time she awoke, someone was there to feed and change her.
She lived for the times when she opened her eyes to find Theo hovering close by. He always spent more time with her than anyone else. Sometimes he let her come. Sometimes he didn’t. He rocked her and cuddled her closer than any other person on staff.

Finally Dr. Farwell declared it was time for her to wean off the medicine and join the other Littles in the main nursery. It took a few more cycles of sleeping and feeding before she was strong enough to lift her head and had the motor skills to control her arms.

It took both Dr. Farwell and Nurse Kay to arrange her in a stroller and wheel her down the white sterile hallway toward a pair of doors that opened only when one of them put a code into the panel.
Annie stopped sucking her pacifier and let it fall out to dangle from a ribbon around her neck as she stared around the bustling room with wide eyes. There were about a dozen Littles in the room. All of them were either crawling or sitting on their bottoms on the brightly colored padded floor.
It was exciting and almost overwhelming. Nurse Kay and another staff member moved her to a bouncy seat in the middle of the action near another Little girl who was looking around wide eyed.
Nurse Kay squatted down between them. “Annie, this is Mindy. It’s Mindy’s first day in the main nursery too. Maybe you two can be friends?”
Mindy was sitting upright on her bottom, so apparently she was stronger. She had blond hair that was up in pigtails, but it was short so they stood out all spiky.
“I’ll come back to check on you girls later,” Nurse Kay announced before walking away.
