I found her in her room going through her clothes. “Come with me.” She dropped her dress and followed me out the door without a word. I like that.

I led her to the storage room and told her what I wanted. “I don’t know how long we might have to be here so I need to make sure my people can eat.

You like to cook so that means you know what the fuck you need to cook...what is it?” she’d made a face at me.

“Must you swear with every other breath?”

“Fuck yes, now as I was saying, I need you to tell me what I need to fill these shelves for at least a six months.”

“A six months, what...”

“Does what you’re about to ask me have anything to do with cooking?”

“Well no, but...”

“I think I told you already about asking me about my shit, now I need that list in half an hour can you do that for me?”

“Yes, I guess so, but first I’d need to know how many people we’re talking about.”

“No need to get all pissy.” She was a huffy little thing when she wanted to be.

I gave her the number and then stayed with her while she went through the stuff and wrote on the little clipboard we kept there.

She gave me a list as long as my arm and I thanked her before heading out to pass it off to a couple guys to go collect the stuff. “Don’t let anyone see you getting this shit, I don’t want people whispering about us stocking up for Armageddon or some fuck.

You better go to Cooperstown to fill this one and don’t come back without everything on that list.”

“What difference does it make? You sacked the last decent cook we had.”

“You idiots would eat anything, that bitch couldn’t cook worth shit.” They laughed at that as I walked away.

I went and found Melissa to get her help on one last thing. I can’t believe I was actually thinking about this shit in the middle of all this chaos, but it was the least I could do.

She was only too glad to help and would’ve talked my ear off if I hadn’t reminded her that time was a-wasting and I had shit to do.

I didn’t have to fill her in on too much since my brother tells her every damn thing, unless it’s something I specifically asks him not to, which I don’t do, because I understand that she is his solace. He loses that he’d become just like me. A hard bitter shell! I wasn’t about to let that happen.

I headed back to the house to put the last pieces together. “You find that pretty dress of yours? You have an hour to get ready.” I was standing in the door to her room with my arms folded, legs braced; waiting for her reaction.

“Ready for what?”

“Your wedding.”

Chapter 1

LAW

It took her a good minute after my announcement to answer. “You’re giving me to him?” her voice was soft and hurt, her yes filled with betrayal.

“How many times have I told you that you’re not going back to him?” she still wasn’t catching on and for the life of me I don’t know why I didn’t just come right out and tell her.

“Then what...who?” she looked scared enough to bolt and I had other shit to do before the happy event, so I couldn’t stand around here all day with her fuckery.

“Just get that dress and be ready in half an hour, we’ve already wasted enough time, and I have to be out there with my men soon in case your beau decides to lose his fucking mind and come looking for you.”

When she didn’t move but just stood there as if transfixed, I turned to leave the room. “If you don’t mind getting married in that then I don’t, I’ll be back to get you.”

I pulled the phone when it rang on my hip and the read out said Clay calling. “What’s up brother?”

“We’ve got a problem.”

“Fuck, another one, what is it this time?” I moved faster on my way to the door. I hadn’t expected Davis to make a move this soon; I thought I had time.

“It’s your cousin.”

“Travis, what about him?” I stopped moving as my brain tried to play catch up.

Travis was due back from his overseas job, there’s no reason for anything to be wrong with him.

Unless the fucking plane went down, and I’m sure I would’ve heard about that before now.

“Uh, he seems to be having some female issues of his own.”

“What the fuck does that mean, and why are you bothering me with this shit right now?” sometimes I think my boys just like fucking with me.

They think I’m too serious all the time; at least that’s what I keep hearing.
