“I know, I feel like smiling when he’s around, and that’s crazy as well, right?”

“No, of course it’s not crazy. If anything, I think that’s more natural.”

Harper chuckled. “I don’t know what I’m going to do, because I don’t want to string him along or give him false hope. But I don’t want him to leave either. It’s all confusing.”

There was silence.

“Have you considered going back with him?” Franny asked.

“What?”

“Well, think about it. You have two choices to make. Either you choose to mate with him and go back with him, or you stay here and tell him once and for all that you and he will not work. How does that make you feel?”

“I don’t know,” Harper said. “I don’t even know if the Fox pack will accept me.”

Franny snorted. “There is no chance of that. If Mateo takes you back, he’s the alpha, they’ll accept it.”

Mateo was tempted to agree with Franny, but he didn’t want them to know he was listening. What he’d heard wasn’t total rejection, but it also wasn’t confirmation of what he wanted to hear.

Chapter Eleven

Harper stood deep into the forest, staring up at the full moon. She had already stripped out of her clothes and was simply enjoying the feel of the tingles from the miraculous event up and down her skin.

She was waiting.

Mateo wasn’t far behind.

All day, she’d been thinking of tonight and what it would mean. She had no idea what she was going to do.

Franny wasn’t helping matters, and it would seem she was on Mateo’s side, which was kind of nice. If Franny could forgive him, that meant she had a chance as well.

Harper lowered her head, staring down at her naked feet where they connected with the earth. The first night she turned was one of the worst experiences of her life. Now, she looked forward to the full moon.

Her wolf was so close to the surface.

He’s coming.

She sensed Mateo’s arrival.

And sure enough, she turned her head and watched as he came out of the thickness of the bushes. He was naked, and Harper sensed a difference in him, but she also noticed it in herself. There was a hunger between them.

Mateo didn’t say a word. He closed the distance between them, and then gripped the back of her neck, drawing her close, and she didn’t fight him. The moment his lips were on hers, she gave herself over to the need.

Mateo hadn’t kissed her like this before. There was a hunger, verging on desperation, and she loved it.

Everything felt more powerful. She had no idea if that was because she wasn’t fighting her desires for him, or if it was because of the full moon. Maybe it was a mixture of both. She didn’t know for sure, but she didn’t want it to stop.

He drove her crazy, and she wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him close, holding him tightly against her.

“Fuck, you’re so beautiful,” he said.

His hands ran down toward her ass, and she cried out, wanting him inside her.

“Fuck me,” she said, not knowing where that demand came from.

He smiled. “Soon. First, we run.”

She wanted to protest but as soon as Mateo let her go, he changed so effortlessly into a wolf. She’d never seen anyone’s transition so graceful.

Within seconds, she joined him, and her wolf was so happy at being close to him, she rubbed against him, not wanting to stop. Harper understood her. They had missed this. Seven years they’d been so lonely, and now, they were finally free.

Mateo nudged her side, and in response, she took off, running through the forest, feeling the wind gliding through her fur. This felt good.

What also felt exciting was knowing Mateo chased her. She sensed the other pack close, but she always opted to run on her own during the full moon. Harper had been accepted within the pack, and she was more than happy to be part of them, but they were not her own pack.

They were not Mateo, and now she finally knew the difference she’d been hiding from herself all this time.

She veered off to the left, then quickly took a right.

Mateo was by her side the whole way, nudging, teasing her, and she loved having him close.

She didn’t know exactly how long they ran, but when he suddenly captured her and they spun, finally landing in the ground, she changed back into her human form and stared up at him.

Mateo had also changed. It was like they were finally tuned to one another.

She put her hands on his chest, and Mateo already took her lips in a possessive kiss. Moaning his name, she pulled him down.

Mateo pressed his palm between her thighs, and he started to tease her. She cried out his name as he broke the kiss, and then trailing his lips down her neck, sucking at her pulse.
