And then we come. I climax. He follows. The room spins. Fills with rainbows. Gold glitterdust. Shooting stars.

He slows the rhythm, but keeps rocking until he’s wrung every last drop of pleasure from me. Even after he’s rolled us to our sides, he eases in and out of me, sending more aftershocks through me.

His kiss on my forehead is tender. Like I mean something to him.

“I’m sorry about the thing with Geo,” I murmur in the darkness, after he’s disposed of the condom, and I’m snuggled up against his chest.

“It’s all good,” he says, automatically.

For some reason, though, I’m still certain it’s not.

Chapter Eleven

Julia

On the morning of my business trip, I arrive at the small landing strip in my best silk blouse and skirt suit set, relaxed from an early-morning ride on Channing’s tongue. This is my first time on a private jet, but I can’t summon the excitement. I wish I were back home with Geo. And Channing.

It’s only been a couple of weeks, but I can’t imagine the house without his presence.

“This way, ma’am,” the chauffeur guides me, taking my small bag.

I blow out a breath and put my game face on. I’m here to work.

Inside the jet is as luxurious as I imagined.

“Julia, welcome aboard.” Mr. van den Berg lounges on a couch, a glass of scotch in his hand. He waves for me to settle in, and I sink into one of the white leather seats.

“And how is young Geo?”

I try, but I can’t seem to smile. “Eating me out of house and home,” I report because I know it'll make him laugh.

He chuckles. “I appreciate you suggesting this face-to-face meeting. I hope Geo will be able to manage without you.”

“Of course.”

“He’s not old enough to leave home alone, now?”

I hesitate. I don’t trust him, Channing’s warning flashes in my head. Wolves are by nature protective, but they also have good instincts. I remember that about Geoffrey. If he had a bad feeling about someone, it was usually right.

But this is my boss, and he’s just being polite, asking about my kid. It’s small talk. I push away the unease. “Oh no, he’s staying with a friend.”

The flight attendant offers me champagne, and I accept. I pretend to sip the liquid while anxiety bubbles in my stomach.

“So your brother-in-law is gone?”

I’m sure his questions are just friendly, and I normally enjoy the interest he takes in my personal life, but for some reason, today it feels intrusive. So, I answer vaguely, “He’s in and out. He has a flexible job.”

Mr. van den Berg sips his drink and nods.

To cut off any further questions, I pull out my laptop and open it up to the contract to review.

Channing

Geo’s with his friend. Julia’s gone. I could go for a run, but my wolf doesn’t feel like it. He’d rather hang around the house and wallow in her scent. The house is too quiet without her and Geo.

I better get used to it. Geo’s wolf is almost settled. Any day now, I’m bound to do something stupid, and Julia's going to kick me out. I don’t know what I'll do then. Go back to my pack? Keep going on missions? That worked for a decade, but not anymore. It’ll take an act of Fate to keep me away from Julia a second time.

Around nine pm, I get a text. Fight club tonight. You coming?

The number isn’t saved, but I know it’s probably Trey or Jared on a burner.

Can’t tonight, I text back. Babysitting.

Babysitting? The texter replies. It’s probably Trey because we give each other shit all the time. Did one of your baby mamas finally hunt you down?

Yeah, that’s Trey.

I grin–not because my reputation as a player is firmly intact–but because my wolf likes the idea of Julia as my baby mama. Maybe I can goad someone to call Julia my baby mama to her face. She’d kill them where they stood.

Something like that.

They have to be desperate to ask you to help.

The smile slides from my face, and I pocket my phone. I know it’s a joke, but jokes are only funny because of the grain of truth behind them. Even my friends know I’m not to be trusted with a kid.

I head outside to work on Julia’s car. I need one more part to fix the transmission, but I can wrap up the rest with the portable floodlight. Buddy borrowed my truck and left his car parked on the other side of the cul-de-sac. He’ll be back with pizza and the part.

A few hours later, my phone buzzes with another text. I almost ignore it because I suspect it’s Trey ragging on me. My wolf is restless tonight, unable to settle.

Instinct makes me glance at the text. It’s from Geo. Can you pick me up?

A cold feeling spreads over me. I call him, and he answers on the first ring.
