“Sure.”

Serena’s gaze shifts to Troy. “If she’s up, I’ll let her know you’re here.”

“No worries.” Troy waves his hand, dismissing the offer. “I have to pick up my little brother. But I wanted Libby to have that.” He nods to the folder in my hands. “Have her call me if she has questions?”

“Will do,” I promise. “Thank you again.”

After he leaves, Serena squeals and claps her hands together. “Eeee, he’s so cute!”

I groan. “Please don’t tease Libby about him. She’ll never come out of her room again if you do.”

“I won’t. Swear.” She runs her fingers over her lips, like she’s zipping up all her thoughts about Troy and Libby sitting in a tree.

Lincoln lets out a cry and Serena hurries to pick him up. “I got you, sweet boy,” she coos, kissing his cheek.

“I’ll go check on Libby.” I wave the folder in the air. “And leave this for her. She has to get her mind back into school mode so she doesn’t fall too far behind.”

“Give her a break. It’s been two days,” Serena says. “She’s been through some serious trauma.”

“That’s what Walker sisters do.”

Shove all the pain down until one day it blows up in our faces.

CHAPTER EIGHT

Dex

Once again, I find myself hoping to run into Trinity first thing in the morning. Not that I’m stalking her or anything but I’m in the garage working on things before the sun comes up.

She’s also an early riser and I don’t have to wait long before she pops into the garage next door and tosses a bag into her Jeep.

“Hey, Trin,” I call out, walking toward her. “You heading into work early?”

“Got a hot photo shoot.” She closes the door and meets me halfway. “When am I going to get you in front of my lens?”

“Uh, never?” I run my hands through my hair. “I don’t think I’m cut out for book covers.”

She snort-laughs. “You’d be perfect.” She crosses her arms over her chest and lifts her chin. “You’re not going to ask me about Emily?”

“How are they?” I ask, hating that I have to go to Trinity for information about my woman and that she can see right through me.

“They were okay. Emily seemed frayed.” Trinity’s mouth tilts into a sympathetic line. “She’s tough, though.”

“How’s Libby?”

“Spunky.” She bites her lip. “But pretty banged up.” She touches her cheek. “Her poor face is scratched with dozens of little cuts. Emily said it was from the glass shattering or something? God, she’s lucky none of it caught her in the eyes.”

I wince at the mental image, then stop. “How bad is it?”

“Hard to tell right now,” Trinity says. “They’re still very red and angry looking.”

“She had blood splattered on her face…”

Emily’s words when she told me about her parents’ murder and how she found Libby that night return in a haunting echo. No wonder Emily lost her shit at the hospital. Not only was she blaming herself for Libby being in the accident, it probably brought back visceral memories of her parents’ murder. Finding their bodies. Searching for her sister. Christ, I’ve witnessed Emily’s nightmares. Libby’s accident must’ve hit her hard from several angles.

Now I want to go to her more than ever.

“I spoke to Serena on my way home,” Trinity says, pulling me back to our conversation. “She was on her way to Emily’s place to stay with them for a few days and help out.”

“What? Really? What about Lincoln?”

Trinity shrugs. “He was with her.”

“Grinder’s going to let them out of his sight for a few days?”

She frowns slightly. “They’re visiting Auntie Emily, not a war-torn country. Serena’s still breastfeeding, I doubt she wants to be far from Link. This was just the most practical solution.”

That was more information than I needed, but I nod anyway.

“Besides, you think Grinder’s not going to stop by to check up on them?” Her face pulls into an incredulous expression. “Come on.”

“You’re probably right.”

“I know I’m right.” She winks at me, then softens her expression. “She said you guys broke up. She sounded sad.”

I swallow hard. “She did, huh?”

“I thought maybe she was conflicted about the club, so I tried to reassure her on that end.”

“Always working on our PR, huh?” I tease.

“Well, I get that club life can be strange to civilians. She seems like a pretty straitlaced girl.”

The club isn’t what drove us apart. At least not now. In the future, it could. “Thanks.”

Trinity’s mouth twists down as if she doesn’t want to say what else she has on her mind. “She mentioned Crystal Ball.”

“Really? At her sister’s bedside, she brought up my job?”

Trinity shrugs. “Libby was sleeping. We didn’t have a whole lot of other topics to talk about. I told her what I’d tell anyone else. Either she trusts you or she doesn’t.” Her lips tilt to the side. “I think she trusts you.”
