CHAPTER

TEN

ADAM

I stare at the stack of files sitting on the edge of my desk and groan. It looks like I’ll be spending the better part of this evening working my way through all the goddamn information my private investigator sent over today. I’ve been trying to get this case resolved fast so I can concentrate on my baby doll. I have plans to attach my last name to hers and soon, but the work just keeps piling on, and I don’t see any relief in sight. My baby doll and I have had a few talks about the future, and I’m ready to knock her up. Several times. I’m thinking I’ll finally be content once we have five or six kids.

I’m about to call Cora to let her know I’m going to be late again tonight when Fischer comes rushing into the room. “I want you to stay calm.” Those words have the absolute opposite effect on me.

“Tell me what’s motherfucking going on.” I don’t mince words. “Is Cora okay?” There’s no way I can lose my baby doll now. I wouldn’t survive it.

“She’s fine.” My heart settles a little. “But I’m sure she’s scared and probably a little pissed off.” He points at the door. “Come on, I’ll explain on our way to the jail.”

“The jail?” I follow him out to his truck. “Did she let Auntie O talk her into some other crazy scheme?” I hop in and hold on as he peels away.

“No.” Fischer drives like a bat out of hell toward the center of town. “It seems there was some sort of mix-up. Your lead-foot missus got pulled over for doing forty-seven in a thirty-five zone.” I rub my lip, wondering why they arrested her for that infraction. “When the deputy ran her license and found a fugitive warrant out of Harris County, he arrested her on the spot. Dillon Armstrong tried to reach you, but your phone is off.”

What in the ever-loving fuck? “Why in the hell is there a warrant out for her?” I reach into my pocket and pull out my phone. Sure enough, the fucker is dead. I forgot to charge it last night after Cora blew my mind with her talented lips.

“Evidently, the ADA didn’t like the deal his boss made with you and decided to refile the charges on Cora and Ophelia,” Fischer growls, causing me to slam my hand down on the dashboard while cussing a blue streak.

“If my girl is hurt or upset, that motherfucker had better run and hide because I’m going to murder him when I get my hands on him.”

“Don’t worry,” Fischer reassures me. “I’ll help you bury the body.”

Dillon Armstrong takes one look at my thunderous expression and waves us back. “Come on, I have Cora and Ophelia waiting in my office.” He motions me to the door at the end of the hall. “You take care of your woman while I try to keep Ophelia Crawford out of trouble.”

“Good luck with that, my friend.” I brush past Dillon and throw open his office door. “Baby doll, are you okay?” My heart settles slightly when I see Cora sitting safely in his office. Then she turns, and I notice her tear-stained, red, puffy eyes. I see red as the urge to kill some asshole roars through me. I drop to my knees on the floor in front of her and wrap my hands around her sweet face. “What’s wrong?”

“The dialysis center just fired me,” she wails. “They said two arrests within ninety days is grounds for termination.”

“Don’t worry, little love.” I hug her close and run my hands up and down her back. “I’ll take care of everything.” While she sniffles against my chest, I glance up and catch Fischer’s eye. “I’ll need your help.”

While Dillon handles the release paperwork, I pull Fischer aside and ask him to find out what he can do about the dialysis center. Those motherfuckers will regret making my little love cry.

Finn and Scarlett arrive a few minutes later, and we all head over to our house to check on the furballs and discuss the situation.

On the ride to our home, I take Cora’s hand and bring it to my mouth. “Don’t worry. I’ll sue those fuckers if they don’t give you your job back.”

Cora sniffles a little before blurting out, “I don’t even care about the job.” I pull the SUV over to the side of the road to give her my full attention. “I figured I’d quit and stay home when we have kids.” I don’t understand why she’s so upset if she was going to quit anyway. “I’ve just never been fired.” She wails, and I blink several times at her all-over-the-place emotions. “Your baby is making me crazy.” Cora points down at her stomach, and I finally catch up with the conversation.
