Soren quietly crept over to the bathroom door and poked his head out. He looked about the room and then toward the door to find that the room was empty now. Angel had left.

So why did he feel like shit?

Relief. Relief was what he was supposed to be feeling. Giddy, giggling relief.

Instead, he was angry and frustrated…and maybe even sad.

“Eat a dick,” Soren snarled and stomped over to the shower. He jerked on the water and stepped inside before it even had a chance to warm up. He wasn’t even sure who he was cursing at. Well, it was probably himself for letting himself care even the tiniest bit about Angel.

But life could also eat a big, sweaty dick. Why hand him someone as funny and amazing as Angel only to make him into…whatever he was. He didn’t even really know. Didn’t want to know.

Maybe he didn’t have a choice.

Maybe he’d been forced into this lifestyle and scaring Soren was a way of protecting him—

“Nope!” he said loudly into the spray. He wasn’t going to let himself think about it. Angel had gotten himself into his own mess, and he wasn’t going to worry about him. He wished him luck and hoped he didn’t get himself killed. That was the extent of it.

A few minutes later, he stepped out of the shower, cleaner and maybe a little clearer in his thoughts. He dried off and dropped the towel on the floor. He’d sleep here tonight and then first thing in the morning, he was packing his bags and heading to the closest train station. He could just as easily wait for his buyer to contact him while in Brussels or Amsterdam or even Barcelona. Anywhere but Paris.

He snatched up his phone, and his heart skipped to see that the buyer had finally messaged him. If he could set up the meeting for tomorrow, he could get out of Europe altogether for a while. Put thoughts of Angel far, far behind him.

Scene is too hot

Will send instructions in a few days

Stay close

Soren sat down heavily on the edge of the bed, reading the three lines over and over again. This was bad. So very bad. What the hell was going on? What was on the hard drive?

It had been a long time since a job had gone south so badly. Years of experience had taught him how to size up a job. He’d learned how to avoid the ones that were far more dangerous than they were worth.

Yes, stealing from one of the world’s richest and most dangerous arms dealers was a big risk, but the payday was also quite nice.

But he was starting to wish he’d never heard of Gabor Kalman.

He wished he could get his heart and brain to say the same about Angel.

Chapter 5

Alexei scrubbed a hand over his face as he sat on the edge of his bed. He couldn’t sleep. He’d barely managed to doze for a few hours, but every little noise had him jolting awake, and his mind immediately returned to thoughts of Soren.

A mistake.

It had all been a reckless, impulsive mistake.

Everything had been going so well. He knew he shouldn’t have gotten comfortable after that last round of sex, but he’d been so damned relaxed, and the bed had been so cozy with Soren’s long body stretched alongside of his. It was supposed to be a few minutes of resting his eyes, but the next thing he knew, he was sleeping and waking with Soren’s smiling face above his.

Fuck, if he’d grabbed his clothes on his way to the bathroom, things wouldn’t have ended so badly. He would have been able to leave with a quick kiss, a smile, and some good memories.

Now everything felt tainted.

Dirty.

Groaning, Alexei pushed off the bed and snatched up a pair of cotton sleep pants that were draped over a nearby chair. He pulled them on and grabbed his phone as he strolled into the living room. The sun had already climbed above the horizon, brightening the sky and seeming to shove aside the clouds so that it could dominate with its cheeriness. Why couldn’t it be raining?

It wasn’t yet seven in the morning. He hadn’t even managed to get three hours of sleep. At least he didn’t have another job lined up to prepare for. He could use a day or two to catch up on sleep prior to jumping into new prep.

Though he was beginning to think that a new job far from France might be the thing to clear his head.

On a whim, he shot a quick text to Marilyn to see if she had any new updates for him on potential contracts. It wasn’t midnight yet in the States, but he still wasn’t expecting her to respond right away.

But to his shock, his phone immediately started ringing, Marilyn’s name flashing across his screen.
