Straddling him, she slowly moved as his mouth explored every curve of her breasts. When his warm mouth covered a beaded nipple, she moved faster, but Cole wrapped his arms around her hips to slow her movements.

“Go faster,” he urged. Over and over, he changed the speed of the game they were playing.

“I can’t take it anymore. I need to come,” she pleaded.

“You can when you tell me what I want to hear.”

Her mind went blank. What in the hell was Cole waiting for her to say?

Her body was ready to riot when it suddenly clicked what he was waiting for.

“I’m yours.”

Explosions went off in her body with a magnitude that she feared she would pass out. Cole must have sensed she had momentarily left her body as he curled his arms under her shoulders to hold her to his chest.

Resting her head on his shoulder, she sucked air into her oxygen-deprived lungs. “You’re lethal.”

Megan felt the curve of his smile against her neck.

“Nope.” He mimicked her accent. “I’m yours.”

Eighteen

Cole gently picked up a wayward curl laying on Megan’s cheek as she slept next to him. Swallowing the lump in his throat, he knew the love he felt for this fragile woman grew stronger each day. So did the fear he felt for her. Some part of her past was eating her alive, and it showed in her appearance and the deep sorrow in her indigo-blue eyes.

Viper had warned him how delicate Megan’s health was when he asked him to watch out for her after he came back from dropping the stray cat off at the shelter. Casey and Max were staying with Shade and Lily. Cole had noticed how Shade stopped talking to Max when Cole was telling Casey about the cat and meeting a girl named Megan. Shade then left and returned with Viper, asking him to come outside to talk.

Cole would never forget standing on the porch as Viper told him about Megan, the fucked-up way her dead husband had treated her, and that she had a psychotic break after losing her baby.

“Is this your roundabout way of telling me I should stay away from Megan?” he asked, already determined to find her.

“No, this my way of asking you to watch out for her. The kid never stood a chance against Curt. Her parents cared more about their reputation than doing what’s right for their daughter. Since you’re new in town, she might find it easier to confide in you if she needs any help.”

“That’s all you need me to do?” Cole rubbed the tip of his boot on the porch’s floorboard. “Because if you want me to play spy for you, that isn’t going to work for me.”

“I don’t need you to play spy for me.” The President of The Last Riders gave him a formidable glance. “I have trained men capable of doing a much better job than you. All I need you to do is be a friend to her.”

“What if it turns into more than friendship?”

Viper gave him a penetrating stare. “If a brother, or anyone else, said that to me, I’d tell them to hold off. The kid needs time to get her feet under her. From what her counselor told Diamond, Megan needs to prove to herself that she’s mentally stronger and can make better choices than when she lived here before. The last thing she needs is to get involved with someone who could destroy what headway she’s made. Where you’re concerned, the worst thing you’re capable of being is too kind. It gets fucking irritating. So, you know. Makes the rest of us look bad.”

“And you just want me to help her?” Still. Cole did not quite believe Viper’s goal was completely altruistic.

“No. that would defeat the purpose.” Viper shook his head. “I just don’t want her to fall. Megan kept a roof over Curt and her head while she was pregnant, and the son of a bitch kept making her switch jobs every fucking time anyone tried to help her. Megan is a fighter; she just doesn’t believe in herself enough to realize that.” Viper strode to the porch rail, giving him his back.

“I don’t hold any ill will against Megan. I would have told her that today, but I could tell from the way she looked …” Viper’s voice turned gruff. “To be honest. I was so fucking shocked by the way she looked. If Curt wasn’t already dead, I would have killed him with my bare hands. The rest of the brothers felt the same way. It wasn’t easy to talk to her when all you want to do is dig up the bastard just to have the pleasure of grinding his bones to dust.”

It had taken Viper several seconds before the rage left his face, turning to sorrow. “In some ways, she reminds me of Reaper. I learned from him that you have to let them get to the place where they’re willing to listen. Megan isn’t there yet. All I want you to do is fill that gap until she’s ready to trust enough to let us in.”
