When I finally caved and checked in on her for a second time, Honey was curled up in bed, wrapped up in my covers, looking small and adorably sexy. Her head lifts up and she gives me a weak smile, sleepily.

“How are you doing, baby girl?”

“I’m good, Mr. Knight.”

“It’s Axel, Honey. Call me Axel.” She moves her legs, sliding them under the covers, rubbing them together, a motion, I don’t miss. Is it just a stretch?

“Axel. I’m fine. A little worried about my bees.”

“They’re up at your farm, right? That’s where you were supposed to be headed after you left the shop.”

“Yes, if I’d been smart enough to do it all earlier.”

“You’re smart enough, but I’m guessing like many, you didn’t think it would hit. When was the last time that this town had witnessed a hurricane?”

“Nineteen forty-five.”

“Exactly, so no one was expecting it. Are you hungry?”

“No, I’m too upset to think about it.”

“Sweet Honey, your bees should be just fine. They were far enough away from the brunt of the storm. We’ll check them out once the storm and the roads clear. I promise.”

“Thank you. I know you don’t have to be so nice, but I’m so grateful for everything.” That was the bucket of ice-cold water I needed.

“You’re welcome. Try to get some sleep.” I leave the room before I get more irritated. If it was anyone else, gratitude would be good, but with her, it’s the last thing I want. Her desire, her lust, her need to be with me because it’s all she wants is what I crave.

Nothing else matters.

After another look around the house, I plant myself in the guest bedroom and monitor the storm on my cell phone. It’s fully charged and I have a backup battery charger. According to the weather advisory we’re in the middle of the storm.

Hell, I’m a bigger loner than most would ever believe. I work around a hundred hours a week and spend the rest of the time, thinking about my sweet little honey and how too fucking young she is for me. We’re both in for a long night with multiple storms brewing one inside and one out.

Chapter Four

Honey

I stretched out across Axel’s bed, wondering how in the world I was ever going to leave this place, knowing that I was nothing more than his little pet project. Someone to protect and look after me because I was helpless. He was a grown man, and although he didn’t say it, I was just a little girl to him.

As much as it pains me, I need to get out of here and check the damage which I’m sure is almost as ruined as my heart and pride. There are men in this town who I’ve repeatedly turned down. Hell, rich tourists have offered to sweep me off my feet, but the only man who has stolen my heart doesn’t see me as someone to be with. He stayed away from me and then rushed out when I hinted at sharing a bed like that was revolting to him.

Checking my phone, I saw that Axel put it on a charger next to the bed for me. Smiling, I power it up and thankfully, I have cellular service, so the nearest tower is still operational. The internet is working and I check the weather report. The damage seems to be minimal and yesterday’s storm was downgraded to a tropical storm.

There’s a message from Max Samuels. Call me. It’s important. I don’t want to call him because frankly I don’t care for the guy. He’s a weasel who wants me to sleep with him so he can get his hands on me and my properties. Still, I do because like he said, it’s important.

“Hello, Mr. Samuels.”

“Oh thank goodness you’re safe. I couldn’t get a hold of your brother yet and I saw your shop and car.”

“What’s going on with them?”

“Your car is kissing the only mailbox in town, and your shop has seen better days.”

“Shit. I really need to check it out and see what I can save,” I mutter to myself, pressing my hand to my phone.

“Where are you?”

“I’m staying with a friend, so I’m safe, but I need to check on my property. Dang. Okay. Thank you, Max. I’ll be down there soon.”

“Sure. Do you need a ride.”

“No, I’ll get down there, but thank you. I’m sure you have your own problems.” He bought like half the properties on main street so if my shop is messed up than so are some of his, but I’m sure his insurance is paid up.

Thinking about saving what I can, I get up and look for my clothes from yesterday. Thankfully, they dried. Although I can’t ask Axel to take me because he’s not going to just drop everything to run back into danger and who knows what other mess there is out there. Maybe I can take one of his vehicles. He has plenty and I’m sure he won’t mind because I’ll bring it back.
