“Nah, she said she had to get packed and then get the store closed up first.” Shit.

“What time was that exactly?” I need to know every detail. “Was she with anyone?” I ask before he can answer the last question.

“We left about eight hours ago, but I left with my family immediately after, so I can’t say if she’s already on the road, and no. I didn’t see her with anyone.”

“Thanks. Stay safe.”

“You, too.” I end the call and go to the place where I know someone will be because he’s insanely more stubborn than she is. Although she’s so much prettier.

With no one to stop me, I came to a violent stop outside the city hall steps and jumped out just as I put my truck completely into park. I rush into Sweet Temptation Bay’s Mayor’s office, wanting a word with the prick before I snap, needing to know where she is.

The weather’s getting bad and initially the town hadn’t been on the National radar until about six hours ago. I’d been on the road back here from a job site just to get information on one person and the mayor was going to give it to me. The only person in this town who really mattered to me. Fuck, the only person on this green earth who mattered to me.

“Listen, Brooks. There’s a storm coming this way,” I say, barging through his door while he packs up some documents.

“I know it is. I made an announcement for the town to evacuate immediately and board up what they could yesterday just in case the hurricane shifts. Luckily, it has just been downgraded.” That’s smart, and it was well before the National Weather Service made the blasted announcement. There was a major downshift, and we were next to get hit.

“What about Honey?” I ask. I didn’t see her with him and I was at the shop and the damn bee farm, but it was dark on my way here and so was her apartment. Fuck, I knew I should have put a tracker in her vehicle.

“What about my sister?” He steps around his desk, the tension in his body growing even more than before. “Why are you concerned about her?”

Because she means everything to me and has since the day we met, even when I didn’t know it. Yes, I wanted her, but our age gap made it impossible for me to push my feelings onto her. “She needs someone to take care of her.”

He raises his eyebrows, reading my intent easily. “My sister is old enough to take care of herself and even so, I’ve made sure that she’s been told to leave personally. Is there another reason you’re so interested in my sister’s well-being?”

I nod. “Yes, she’s mine, Brooks. One day, she’ll be my wife.” He laughs and I want to punch him in the face, knocking that smug look off it. “What the fuck is so funny?”

“Does she know that?”

“Not yet.” As soon as I get my hands on her, she will.

“Well then, you better tell her that because last I heard, she was going to go on a date with Max Samuels before I gave out the evacuation order.”

I slam my hand on his desk, ready to kill that punk ass scammer. “What? That fucking piece of shit trying to buy out the properties around her building?”

There’s no time to beat around the bush. I’m done waiting and I’m done pretending I’d win this losing battle with my emotions. “Yes, that’s the fucker. Maybe it will be in your favor since he’s almost your age. She’s probably got a thing for old men.” He smirks with perfect teeth like he’s daring me to knock them out.

I’m in his face, seeing red. “Do you have a death wish, Brooks? Because I’ll fucking make it appear like you drowned in the storm.”

“You could try, but I’m not just some weasel mayor in a suit. I spent ten years as a Navy Seal. Dangerous waters have been my friend and my foe that I’ve beaten many times, so try me,” he winks, straightening his suit.

Unafraid of him, I glare at the fucker, and then I jab him in the chest. “Listen to me, Navy Seal boy, your sister’s mine.”

“I don’t give a fuck how tough you think you are. She’s only with you if she wants to be, and that’s unlikely.”

I nod once. “I’ll find out soon.” Storming out of his office, I slammed his door just to be a dick.

In my hurry, I nearly ran into his assistant. “Sorry.” I apologize and thankfully don’t knock her on her ass.

“Everything okay, Mr. Knight?” She tilts her head full of concern, looking behind me at the door and then back again.

I follow her gaze and then answer, “It will be. You should get somewhere safe because the chance of the storm turning has grown in the past two hours.”
