She rolled her eyes at her friend. “Okay, you just said I never talk about any of my experiences ever, right?”

“Yeah, I know, but that was because you were keeping it secret when you were doing that older guy.”

Amy laughed. It was strange but she didn’t even feel embarrassed. She’d never been one to talk about her sexual experiences, and Daniel was no exception.

“Why did you want to keep it a secret?” Penelope asked, flicking her hair over her shoulder.

She finished her cookie, gathering up the crumbs in the square of tissue she had placed in front of her on the desk. She didn’t like mess, but she did love a good cookie.

“I don’t know, it just happened. Living in a town where everyone knows everyone and meddles with everything, it was nice to be with someone without all the finger-pointing and judgment.”

“And the finger-pointing and judgment now?” Penelope asked.

“I think Daniel and I can handle it.”

Penelope sighed. “You know, I have watched you two dance around each other for years, and now you’re finally getting it on. This is exciting stuff. You do realize you will be the town gossip for the year, right? Daniel and Amy, finally dating.”

Amy sighed. “I think it’s time to get back to work.”

“Well, are you not going to tell me what he’s like in bed? He looks like he will keep you busy for hours, for all the right reasons, am I right?”

“I am not going to answer that.” There was no way she was going to answer that, even if the answer was yes.

Penelope let out a squeal and then clapped her hands. “I am so excited. I wonder if there are going to be people trying to judge when you get pregnant.”

“Pregnant?” Amy asked. She wasn’t about to tell her best friend that she and Daniel hadn’t worn any protection. Besides the fact they hadn’t talked about it themselves, she wasn’t going to let her know how careless she’d been. The sex had been off the charts.

“I wonder how long it will be before little Daniels and Amys are running around. They are going to be so cute.” Penelope gasped and then reached out, grabbing her arm. “You know what I just realized?”

“That you’re kind of scaring me with how quickly you’re having me barefoot and pregnant with a lot of little kiddies running around?” Amy asked, giving a light chuckle.

Penelope blew a raspberry. “You and I both know that is exactly what you want. You’re going to be a great mother, and I bet Daniel will be an awesome father. I mean, you both are so right for each other, it makes sense you’d be perfect at all the little roles.”

Amy looked at her friend, hoping she’d take a breath. It was nice that she thought so highly of her, though. It was really sweet.

“What did you just realize?”

“I think Daniel is a Reaper? You know, one of the town Reapers of The Reapers.”

“I know what The Reapers are. There is no way of knowing who’s a member and who’s not,” Amy said.

“What would you do if Daniel was one?”

Amy stopped and thought about it, and then shrugged. “Nothing.”

“Nothing, you’d do nothing?”

“Why would I do anything?” Amy asked.

“I don’t know, because he may or may not be a Reaper, and you know, that’s kind of important.”

Amy wrinkled her nose. “I don’t think it is quite so important.”

“You don’t?”

“No. The Reapers take care of the town. They do so by keeping their involvement secret, and I think that’s a good thing. They have taken care of this town.”

Penelope sighed. “True, and I bet all the good men are Reapers as well.”

“What do you have against them?” Amy asked.

“I don’t have anything against them, I just … I don’t know. I guess it’s the whole secret kind of shit. You know. I can’t help but wonder if they have secret meetings and plot how to keep the town this quaint little resort, touristy kind of place.”

Amy folded her arms beneath her breasts. “And you think that’s a bad thing?”

“Do you think it’s a good thing?”

“I don’t know. I wasn’t around when it was a bad place.”

Penelope snorted.

“Ah, that’s right, you don’t believe the old stories of this place being run by crime lords, drug runs, and stuff like that.”

“She should believe it,” Martha said, startling them both.

Amy pressed a hand to her chest.

“Oh, please, this is Lost Creek. Nothing bad ever happens here, and I doubt anything ever has. All people do is use it as a way of bringing in tourists, and I guess keeping them in line.”

Martha tutted. “You weren’t around when things went bad, but I was. I know what it was like then, and I know the haven it is now. Trust me, you girls are safer for this place being controlled by The Reapers. Without them, we’d be sitting ducks, and then you’d have a completely different life … both of you would.”
