He and Billy drove out of town, going just past where the food waste was dumped. They sat in silence, both preparing for the truck driver to arrive.

Nixon sent him a text to let him know the driver had passed. Daniel had already received the first text when the driver was on the way through.

He waited, and sure enough, the thumbs-up emoji arrived in his text inbox, and he and Billy pulled into the center of the road, and waited.

They didn’t have to wait too long before the driver stopped. He kept pressing his horn.

Daniel walked over to the driver’s side of the truck, opened the door, and smiled.

“You and I are going to have a little chat.”

“I don’t know who the fuck you are, but get out of my way. I’ve got deliveries to make.”

Nixon and August, as well as seven more guys of The Reapers, surrounded the truck.

“Do not fuck with us. These men just had to clean up the food you left on the side of the road back there. For your own safety, I suggest you get out of the fucking truck.”

He wasn’t in a playful mood.

He was ready to do business.

And it wasn’t going to be pretty.

Chapter Eight

Amy sat at the bar, nursing the same beer she ordered when she arrived. She looked at Daniel and couldn’t help but notice his busted knuckles. They hadn’t been split or bruised this morning, yet they were now. She couldn’t help but think about what Martha had said to her. Did it matter to her if he was a Reaper?

Amy thought about Daniel being a Reaper and the truth was, she didn’t care. If he was a Reaper, then that meant he was protecting the town. The busted knuckles suggested there was a reason for him to be protecting the town, but she didn’t know what it was. This was not good.

Someone had been threatening the town, and now she had a desire to know who it was, but she also knew it wasn’t her place to know. She wasn’t a Reaper.

Daniel moved toward her and offered a smile.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“Yeah, I’m fine. It has been a long day, but the bonus is I get to open my café tomorrow, so yay.”

“That’s good news.”

Amy looked down at his knuckles and reached out, taking his hands in her own. “You know, they were not like that this morning,” she said.

He went to pull his hands away from her, but she held them tightly.

“Now, I’m no medical expert, but it looks to me like these sting a little.” She looked toward him and he didn’t say a word. “Do you have a first-aid kit back in your office?”

“Yes.”

She put her bottle down and then let go of his hands, making her way around the bar, not caring if anyone saw them as she walked back toward his office. The door was locked and she had to wait for him to flick the key into the lock. Stepping into the office, she had to wait as he grabbed the first-aid kit.

“Are you going to ask me how I got the busted knuckles?” Daniel asked, putting the small first-aid kit into her hands.

She looked at him, took a deep breath, and thought it over. Did she want to know? A tiny portion of her brain screamed yes, that she did want to know, but another part of her didn’t.

“No, I don’t want to know.”

If she needed to know anything, she had a feeling he’d tell her.

Opening the kit, she found the alcohol wipes, cleaned his knuckles before applying a soothing cream, and then covered them with a dressing, followed by a bandage.

“Well, I had no idea you were adept at making bandages,” he said.

Amy let go of his hand and he gripped her waist, pulling her in close. She didn’t pull away from him, just stared at him, unable to look away. Putting her hands on his shoulders, she slowly slid up, teasing the hair at the back of his neck.

There were so many things she wanted to say. So many questions to ask him, but instead, she stared into his eyes, waiting, allowing the seconds to pass, followed by minutes. Then, rather than say a single word, she made sure there was no distance between them and wrapped her arms around his neck, pressing her body close to him, and kissing him, hard.

He wrapped his arms around her, and she felt like her world was safe. It was the strangest feeling.

Pulling back just slightly, she cupped his face and kissed him again. At first, she was gentle, exploring his firm lips, but then need took over, and she ran her hands over his body, grabbing the shirt and tearing it apart. Buttons sprayed across either side of the bedroom, but she didn’t care. Her need was far greater, and Daniel’s was as well.
