She says she’s done with the district, but I know Sid. She loves the thrill. She’ll find her way back one way or another.

Clayton has the kind of power to make sure she can. The Hennessy name rings all types of bells. He could help Sid. With that thought, I quickly take the envelope.

Hennessy is embossed on the outside of the large black stock envelope. I reach inside and pull out two black, smaller envelopes. Our names are embossed in the same fancy silver writing, on the outside of each thick black envelope. I open the one addressed to me. My heartbeat pounding.

I’m both excited and nervous at the same time. What if this is another attack on my best friend? I frown at that thought and start to read the letter.

Dear Chloe,

It has come to my attention that you and I both have a few topics of common interest. Sidney James being one of them. In light of her recent victory, I’d like to reach out to celebrate. As you know, my team had a hand in seeing to it things went Sidney’s way. I have a proposal to offer you both.

I’m a man of resources and I’d like to use mine to help you both find a little enjoyment in your lives. I’m well aware that Ms. James may not be on board with this, but I was wondering if you would be so kind as to persuade her to join you for an evening at my club.

Please ensure she receives the letter I’ve sent. I insist the two of you join me. One does not work without the other. I will see you both, tomorrow evening at Club Dream. Rest assured; I will make it worth both of your time.

Sincerely,

Clayton Hennessey

I can’t help the sly grin that takes over my face. Sid needs this, a night out to forget her troubles. Heck, from the rumors I’ve heard, Clayton is a fine-ass man. It may be more than worth our wild to show up to this invitation.

Clooney Hennessy is also a known figure in the business world. Although, his son tends to be more of a mystery. Clayton stays out of the limelight.

I once heard there are other sons, but they too remain hidden. If they, in fact, exist, the rumor mill never has complete facts. You have to take what you hear with a grain of salt. I’ve learned to check facts for myself in the financial circuit. People talk and they never get the story right.

I’ve heard talk of an older son who had a falling-out or something with the dad. I want to see this Clayton with my own eyes. Call me a myth buster, my interest is piqued.

“You can tell your boss we’ll be there,” I purr to the assistant still standing before me.

He nods. “Thank you. I’ll be certain to do so,” he says with a shy smile.

“Oh, yes, Sid, we’re going to get you laid and paid. Hennessy has all the connections we need. Things are starting to look up,” I say to myself as I get into the elevator.

Chapter 5

The Surprise

Chloe

As soon as I open my apartment door, the silence and loneliness sets in. I miss Ally and Sid. This place feels so empty without them. There’s no music playing, no one dancing or laughing through the place.

“You need to get a life, Chlo,” I murmur to myself.

I think about dating and wince. I’m not ready for that life. Yet, I don’t know if I can do the casual sex thing. Yup, I’m all talk. I’ve only ever been with one guy.

Not that I haven’t thought about changing that. I’m just not ready to sign up for that disappointment. My vagina deserves better.

I kick off my shoes and start to strip out of my clothes as I move through the quiet space. Once in my panties and bra, I flop down on my bed and stare up at the ceiling.

My thoughts turn to Sid. She dodged a huge bullet. I truly think this meeting with Clayton will be good for her. Sidney has sacrificed so much for me. I only want to see her happy.

She has such a kind heart. Yet it’s guarded. She’s been even more guarded since the indictment. I have to be cautious about how I sell tomorrow night to her.

I tap my lip in thought. I snap my fingers as I think of how to spring this on her. Jumping up from the bed, I go to grab the envelope from the table by the door, where I left it.

Envelope and phone in hand, I pad to the kitchen for a glass of wine and then head back into my room. I dial Sid as I sit on the bed and fold my legs in front of me. Sid picks up as I take a sip from my glass.
