“I know I do.”

Chapter 48

Trust

Chloe

I’m standing next to the fire, staring at the flames as I think of my session this afternoon. Dr. Keller made some good points. I’m not trying to ignore her advice, but Gregor’s insistence on keeping me in the dark drives me crazy.

“You’re too hard on him,” my father-in-law says as he walks up beside me.

I sigh and turn to him. He and Sid have grown a tighter bond. I’m still wary of getting attached to anyone else. Eileen and Chloe have crawled their way into my heart as it is.

“I think he should listen to my concerns,” I reply.

He narrows his eyes on me. I always get the feeling he’s a step ahead of us all. Gregor’s father has been watching us closely since I first met him almost five months ago.

If I’m honest, so much has been going on and it’s been hard to establish a relationship with this man. Between Gregor having to dive in to help Clay with the business and all the other things going on. Oh God, and that nut who tried to hurt Sid—I never liked his ass.

He was shady from the get-go. Still, even I never saw all that shit coming. In truth, I’ve watched my husband show another side of himself yet again.

The fierce protector of his brothers. You wouldn’t think that would be the cause of the tension in our relationship, but it is when his little brother seems to be dragging my baby sister into his shit.

Gregor wants me to have patience with the two, but I want to knock some sense into Ally and pull them apart. I don’t get or understand what’s going on between them. Let’s just say, I don’t get or understand my sister anymore either.

“You’ve hardened your heart, but I think you should know that my son will always protect your happiness. That includes those around you who you’re concerned about,” he says.

I turn away to look at Ally and Cane locked in a heated conversation. I want to interfere, but I’ve been restraining myself as I try to remember she’s not a little girl anymore. As Dr. Keller said, it’s time for me to let go. I grind my teeth.

“She’s my little sister. I’ve cared for her as if she were my own child. Gregor is asking me to ignore that. I don’t think he would be so quick to ignore things if it were Chloe,” I bite out more harshly than I intend.

I’m still struggling with all of this. I’ve yet to fully wrap my head around what I should do. What’s the best thing to do.

“Cane is my unique child. Whatever you see is never what you get. Your perception of him may be clouded by your love for your sister. The thing about a shield… you can’t see past it to know who’s wielding the weapon,” he says.

“What?” I turn to look him in the eyes.

“Sit back and watch, my dear. You will see what I see. For now, you should make up with your husband. Your wedding is in a few months. I’d hate to have to call off such a big event with so many guests,” he says with a wink before he turns to walk away.

I look around to see that Sid and Clayton haven’t returned. Gregor heads in my direction with a sleeping Chloe in his arms. His face is still tight from the argument we had earlier.

“Hey.” I turn as Ally’s voice pulls my attention.

“Hey,” I say and frown.

“I’m going to leave. I just wanted to say good night,” she says.

“Are we still having breakfast together in the morning?” I ask.

“Yeah, sure. I’ll be there.” She nods.

“Okay,” I say, looking toward a jittery Cane. “Ally—”

“Have a good night, Ally. See you later,” Gregor cuts me off.

I turn and glare at him. Unfortunately, my sister takes it as a cue to dart off. My shoulders tighten. I’m going to light into Gregor as soon as we get to the apartment. Enough is enough.

We say our goodbyes and make our way to the car. I keep my focus on the window as we ride in the back of the SUV. I can feel Gregor’s stare on me.

“When will you learn to trust me?” he asks, breaking the silence.

“This has nothing to do with my trusting you,” I turn to him and snap.

“Yes, it does. I told you I’d handle the situation with Ally. I’ve told you that I have it under control. Yet, you still want to get involved,” he seethes.

“She’s my sister. I’m always going to be involved when it comes to my sister,” I toss back.

He nearly comes out of his seat as he turns to me. I can see the frustration in his face. I go to turn away, but he catches my chin and turns me back to him.
