“It sure as hell looks like it and it tried to attack me.”

“Well, he’s she, and since we all got a look at what she saw, I think it’s understandable. Most women would be drawn to your—”

“Mom, please.”

“I’m just saying, Marigold, honey. It was quite impressive. I think most men would be curious about it, too.”

“Not me,” Jansen huffs and yeah, he wants to kill me at this point.

“You’re buying me a new desk,” Marigold mutters.

“I can do that. I’m not buying you a new sex toy, though. You don’t need that damn thing. You got me.”

“Men aren’t always up for the job and those things as you put it are needed,” she argues.

“Ace, I can guarantee you that when it comes to you, I will always be up for the job.”

“Son, you just want me to kill you, don’t you?”

I clear my throat and shake my head. “Not especially, sir. If it makes you feel any better, I’m serious about your daughter. I’m going to bust my ass to keep her happy.”

“Oh, I don’t think it’s your ass that will keep her tied to you, AC,” Mom says.

“God, Mom let it rest,” I groan.

“You can call me, Slater, Ms. Reed.”

She winces like I hit her. “Call me, Ida Sue,” she chastises. “No one ever calls me Mrs. Reed.”

“I do,” Jan says. “Took me long enough to get that name on you that I’ m going to use it for the rest of my life.”

“It’s a bunch of unnecessary hog wash if you ask me. I’m still the same person, Jan. I don’t know why you insisted. If I told you once, I’ve told you a million times that you don’t have to buy the—”

“Lovey, my temper is close to the edge right now. Don’t tempt me.”

She mutters under her breath but doesn’t finish her thought.

“What do you say you’re going to bust my ass to keep me happy? You make it sound like you’re asking for my hand in marriage or something.”

“Is that what you want, Ace?” I ask. I hadn’t thought about marriage, but if that’s what she wants, I can put a ring on her finger. I already know that I’m in deep with this woman and don’t want out.

Her eyes look like they might pop out of her head. “Are you insane?” she screeches.

Well, damn, that’s not exactly how you want your woman to react to marriage.

“I’m starting to wonder,” I answer with a sigh.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“That means I’ve never chased after a woman in my life, Ace and you have me jumping through hoops. Hell, I was even going to risk life and limb to climb out of a second story window for you—just because you were ashamed to introduce me to your parents.”

“Well, we certainly got introduced to you,” her mom says.

“You can say that again,” Jansen mutters. God, he really hates me.

“You sure fucked that up didn’t you,” Marigold mutters.

“Marigold, watch your mouth,” her mother grumbles.

“Seriously, have you heard the language used this morning and you’re going to get after me?”

“I am and I did. Now both of you eat your breakfast,” she says putting a giant platter of eggs, bacon, and toast in front of me.

“We’re not getting married, Bat-Boy,” Marigold snaps, looking at me.

“Okay,” I respond.

“And you are buying me a desk. An expensive one that’s solid wood so that if I ever let you in my bedroom again, I’ll know you can’t break it.”

“I can do that, but like I said, I’m not buying you a sex toy back. You need a dick, you use mine. End of story.”

“It’s not my sex toy,” she denies.

“You’re not getting back in her room unless you’re married,” Jansen huffs out.

“Then he’s never getting back into my room,” Marigold gripes.

“Fine, we’ll buy a place.”

“Buy a place?”

Damn that woman can shrieks when she wants to.

“Yeah. I don’t care where we can live here if you want to stay in Mason, or we can go to Dallas closer to where I work.”

“You play ball, I don’t think you can call that work, Slater.”

“The hell you can’t. I work my ass off,” I answer, taking a bite of Ida Sue’s breakfast. I refuse to rise to her bait. She wants me mad to have an excuse to run away. “Also, what do you mean it’s not your sex toy? If you get off using those on your men, babe, you can forget it. My ass has a permanent non entry sign glued to the son of a bitch.”

“I don’t think this is a conversation you should be having in front of us. We’re Marigold’s parents after all,” her mother says gently. “Let’s just forget the scene upstairs and start over, shall we? Let me get you something to drink.”

“Way to go, Bat-Boy, you’ve managed to make my mother uncomfortable, and I wouldn’t have thought that was possible.”
