I feel like laughing when I think back on how the last seven or so minutes went down.

Paranoid much, Cat?

It's almost like being in a horror movie all on my own—-

Because the King isn't with me.

The thought comes out of nowhere, and my mood instantly spirals. I tried drowning myself with work today, but I still failed miserably at forgetting how quickly I've been dumped.

I know men can be assholes, and that there are men who'd be willing to say whatever you need to hear just to get you in their bed...and dump you the next morning.

I know that, really, but I guess I never outgrew my naïveté because this right now is me being an idiot all over again.

It's just like before, dammit.

I once thought everyone around me would be good, and Chester paid the price for my stupidity.

And I know, I really do know men can be wolves in sheep's clothing, and the King...

He's an actual freaking wolf, for God's sake.

The biggest and baddest there is, even.

But instead of those things giving me pause, I went ahead and slept with him, and now it's my broken heart's turn to pay the price.

"Hello, Cat."

It would have been incredible if the man who's suddenly standing in front of me is that same someone who broke my heart, and he's here to grovel for my forgiveness.

But because I can't seem to shake off misfortune where my dating life is concerned—-

I already feel sick to my stomach before I even lift my gaze. It doesn't matter how much time has passed since I last heard that voice. I'd know it anywhere...just like I'd never be able to forget the crazy blue eyes that are currently staring down at me.

Julius.

I don't know whether to feel glad that I wasn't imagining things, after all...or terrified because it really is him in the flesh, and his blue eyes look crazier than ever.

"Aren't you going to say hi?"

His tone is playful, and that tells me he's still the same sociopath who killed my baby.

"You're not supposed to come near—-"

"Shut up!"

His snarl is vicious, but it's the split-second glimpse of his mouth that terrifies me.

Fangs.

And they're stained with blood.

"Why do you have to be such a fucking bitch to me all the time, Cat?"

All I can do is stare at him in a mixture of terror and shock.

Julius is human like me, so why does he have bloodstained fangs?

"I've always only wanted to love you." His voice starts off at an entreating note. "So why can't you just give me a fucking chance?" But he's already screaming in my face by the end of his rant, and all I can see are his fangs.

"I couldn't figure it out before, but I get it now. I fucking—-owww!"

Tears threaten to blind my eyes as I knee him in the groin. I know I only have this one chance to make my escape, and I don't care if I have to jump out of the fucking train—-

"You fucking, fucking bitch!"

A strangled sob rushes out of my throat as Julius grabs my hair from behind, and his fingers dig painfully into my scalp as he yanks me back and throws me on the floor.

"You know what your problem is?"

I thrash and struggle against his hold, but his strength is inhuman.

Preternatural.

And another sob claws out of my throat as Julius' crazy blue eyes reveal the murderously rotten core of his soul.

MICHALIS WAITED IN the shadows yet again. A shapeshifter was only able to hear sounds and track scents up to a certain distance, but the abilities of primals like him had always been far keener. It was one of the few good things that came with being the only survivor of one's species, and it was this that allowed him to hunt unseen and unheard.

The sun was dangerously close to setting by the time Catalina stepped out of his tower, and as soon as she started running towards the station, it was the man's turn to reveal himself.

His speed was preternatural, but his move was severely lacking in grace and agility. It was almost as if he had been human his entire life...until he was not, and the similarity between this man's transformation and Catalina's was not lost on him.

Catalina boarded the train as soon as it arrived, but the man waited until the train had started to move before scampering up to its roof.

It was as if the man was hiding from Catalina as well...or was this a ploy to convince Michalis that Catalina and the man had nothing to do with each other?

He only started running when the train eventually sped out of view, and he stayed back far enough to prevent his scent from betraying his presence, but near enough for him to make another attempt at reading both of their minds.
