“What are you?” Caden’s voice drew the attention of everyone at our table. He asked She Shay, but there was no judgment or expression on his face. The question was genuine. “I—just want to know what we’re dealing with here.”

She hesitated, and shared a look with her man, but he was quiet. “My father was an angel. We call them messengers.”

“Oh!” I looked between the two. “An angel and a demon?”

“I’m only half.”

“What’s your other half?” That came from Our Shay.

“Human.” She shared another look with Kellan, this time more lingering.

How did that work? An angel and a demon? But it must’ve because it was obvious he was head over heels for her. I frowned. “How did you meet? Like was it a scene where it was a battle to the death? You’re enemies. Then you meet and bam, the first time your sword slices into her, you’re suddenly wishing a different sword was going–”

“Summer.” Kennedy was laughing. “Oh my God.”

She Shay’s eyes gentled. “It wasn’t like that, but now I’m kinda wishing it were. A more interesting story than what did happen.” They were doing the ‘look’ thing and they were so having their own conversation.

“Enough about us. What are you all doing here? And what are your names?”

We told her, which she got a kick out of the shared Shay name. Kellan just kept giving Our Shay odd looks for a while until we’d ordered our third round, and ate through three pizzas.

Kellan left the table at one point, and it wasn’t soon after when we had another round of drinks and food coming to our table. If he’d ordered them, it would’ve taken longer to get here because Mermaid Bar had filled with more customers since we’d first come in.

I was going with my theory that he used his magic powers for us. When it came to pizza and drinks, I was down for it.

I was winded, and I couldn’t believe I was saying that. But I was. A DJ came in, and we’d been dancing for the last three hours straight. I had sweat sliding down my back, and had no idea how my hair was looking. And when I said we were dancing, I meant Kennedy, myself, and She Shay. Also, She Shay was awesome at dancing. She could twerk way better than me and Kennedy. I was blaming her magic powers for that because if I’d had to choose any magic powers, twerking would be it. Or flying.

Probably twerking, but I needed a break.

Heading back to the table, I saw only Kellan sitting there. He had a whole steely gaze going on, and he switched from watching his woman shaking it to watching me coming toward him. When I got there, I sat on the chair across from him and looked around.

“Your man is trying to pay the bill. The male Shay went to piss.”

Male Shay. I liked He Shay better. Or Our Shay. I wiped at some sweat on my forehead. “Oh. Cool.”

He’d gone back to watching his Shay, but his gaze flitted to me once again. “Cool? That’s what you human folk say nowadays?”

I considered it and shrugged. “Pretty sure it’s supposed to be ‘lit’ now. I’m showing my age. I think ‘awesome’ shows it more.”

“Words are so fickle. They have power that humans don’t respect.”

I frowned. “I respect my words. I don’t say anything that’ll hurt someone unless it’s the truth and it’s supposed to help in the long run. I have a feeling you don’t have the same regards.”

“I’m a demon. What are you not getting about that?”

I shrugged, relaxing more into my seat. “A demon lost over his angel. Love kinda screwed you.”

His eyes sharpened. “Excuse me?”

“I mean, look at you. All brooding and badass. Your whole aura is like ‘don’t mess with me or I’ll squash you with a thought.’”

He leaned forward, a dangerous smile starting to form. “I can squash you with a thought. Don’t tempt me, Human.”

Okay. Now I was getting irritated. The back of my neck was heated up and angry. “Stop calling me that name.”

He frowned, a flicker. “You are a human.”

“Do you want me to refer to you as Demon? Yes, Demon. No, Demon. Whatever you say, Demon. I’d think it would get annoying.”

That evil grin was back. “I prefer it. Thank you.”

I flushed. “My name is Summer. Yours is Kellan.”

There was a twitch in his gaze, and I swear that it was amusement. He was enjoying this conversation. I narrowed my eyes, sitting back, giving him a longer studying look. “You know what I think?”

“I have a feeling I won’t have to wait long to find out.”

“I think you’re so in love with Shay, and she’s having so much fun, that not only are you doing this to appease her, you’re also kinda having fun too. I’m right. Aren’t I?”
