“You like it?” My voice is husky because I’m picturing her on her back with her legs spread while I sink deeper and deeper.
She nods, and that little tongue of hers darts out to lick her lips. She’s practically begging me to kiss her.
The sound of Devin’s horn blowing as he pulls out of the driveway breaks the spell, and she takes a step back. I have to drop my hold on the coat and curse that asshole for ruining the moment.
“Let me show you the barn,” I say, and she seems to brighten up.
“I’m excited to see it. Do you keep animals in it or is this just an event space?”
We walk side by side across the snowy field to the big barn next to the house. It’s one of several, but this is the nicest of all of them and the one Mary Beth wants to use.
“I usually keep a couple of horses in it, but right now we’ve got several little ones that need to be watched over. This barn is close so I can come out here at night if one of the ranch hands can’t stay.”
“Little ones?” She looks at me curiously.
We get to the barn, and I reach for the side door. There is a set of bigger doors that open to the main area, but it’s cold out, and I don’t want to let the chill in.
“Our last shipment of cattle came from a farm that was closing down. I didn’t want to leave anything behind,” I tell her as we go inside and I show her over to one of the stalls.
“Oh my gosh, baby goats!” She squeals with delight as the two little baby goats come running over, eager to see if someone has a bottle for them.
“I’ve got a rancher coming by later and staying out here with them tonight. But I thought you might want to feed them?” Judging by her initial reaction, I think she will want to, but if she doesn’t want to get dirty, I can do it on my own.
“Are you serious?” Her eyes light up like I’ve told her I’m Santa Claus. “Of course I want to feed them.”
There are a few bottles already warmed up, so I grab them and show her how to do it. The baby goats are wiggly, and she laughs as she tries to hold one and feed it while I take the other. Sabrina coos at the little goat like it’s her own baby, and I like watching how happy it makes her.
“You are such a good eater,” she tells the little girl goat as she scratches behind her ear. “What’s her name?”
I shrug. “I run a cattle farm for beef.” I give her a pointed look. “We don’t name the animals.”
“Oh.” Her expression changes, and she looks at me with worried eyes. “You aren’t going to eat these babies, are you?”
The bark of laughter that leaves me is unexpected, but I shake my head. “No, there’s another farm nearby that keeps goats. They sell their milk and cheeses. I’m going to see if they want them once they’re weaned.”
“I don’t know how you could let them go. They are so cute,” she says, and the little goat she’s feeding is closing her eyes like she’s sleepy.
“Yeah, but I don’t have the time to take care of them. And I can’t spare more of my guys to look after them when we’ve got so much going on with the cattle.”
“Well, I’d be happy to feed these little ones anytime.” Sabrina makes the offer sound casual, but thoughts of her coming over regularly to feed the goats is an appealing idea. Maybe I should consider keeping them a little while longer.
“Do you want to see the other babies?” I ask, and once again she lights up.
“You’ve got more?”
At that moment I wonder if I can get an entire shipment of baby farm animals so I can see her smile over and over.
Chapter Seven
Sabrina
“This place is truly incredible,” I tell Booker as I pet the little chicklet's head. I was not expecting this when I came out here. Honestly, I’m not sure what I was expecting. There are so many babies here. I don’t think I’ll ever want to leave. What a dream Snow Pine Ranch is.
When Booker doesn't respond, I turn around to see him watching me. He’s leaning up against one of the stall doors, and although he appears casual, he still dominates all the space around him. Even if he's not in it.
“Maybe we could make it a manger theme. I know you mentioned a tea party." I recall him saying that the first day, and it really stuck in my head. "The tea party would be fun, but a manger is really hard to pass up, and this place is perfect for it.” I set the chicklet back down with the others and watch them waddle around adorably. “The kids would love it.”
