Maren got quiet, real quiet, eerily quiet. “You’re going to blackmail her?”

“I’m not going to make her break up with her boyfriend, if that’s what you’re thinking. That’s a lost cause with those two, and besides, I was really only into—” She shut up before clearing her throat. “Fine. You want to know what I’m going to do? Really want to know? I’m going to turn every Macquire University fan against Ryan Jensen’s girlfriend. I’m going to twist reality and confound every single one of them until they blame her for any mistake he makes. Any game they lose, they’ll blame her. Every foul he makes. Every rebound he misses. Every time the ball misses the net, whether it’s from him or his teammates, they’re going to blame her. And this is going to keep happening until I shatter her, and when that worthless mentally defective piece of trash breaks apart, it’s going to destroy Ryan Jensen. And that’s what I really want. I want Jensen broken. I want him to lose his mind because everyone will know why her sister ki—”

I was just outside their door, and hearing every word, ice formed over my organs.

Every single one of them.

This girl. She had no idea. No idea how wrong she was, but she would, and she would very shortly.

Maren ground out, her voice hitching because she was on the verge of losing her control, “This is about basketball?”

“No.” Kellie heaved out a dramatic sigh. “None of this is about basketball.”

“Why then? For views on your blog?”

“God no. I’m doing this as a gift for Cahill.”

The fuck?

“Cahill?” Maren burst out.

“Yes. Cameron hates Jensen. The fans might not have realized how much he hates him, but I’m a journalist. We hear all the behind the scenes information. All the gossip. Cahill’s been after Jensen since he got here last year, but he wasn’t thinking of the big picture. He was only trying to ice him out from the team. He wants Jensen gone and Jensen’s weakness is his girlfriend. That’s why I’m going to destroy her. And then I’m going to tell Cameron how I gift-wrapped his future basketball career for him, handing it over to him on a silver platter, by getting Ryan Jensen out of his way. And the best part of all of this is that no one will have any idea that the tragic events that will happen to Ryan Jensen and his girlfriend were masterminded by someone else.” I didn’t need to see the monitor to know the smug smirk she would be wearing. It oozed through her voice. “By me.”

She sounded victorious already. She was so sure everything was going to happen exactly how she wanted it to happen, and the sad part was that in the past, it had happened how she wanted it to happen.

She hurt other people and she got away with it.

I started to reach for the door handle. It was almost my turn, my entrance.

Maren said, her voice dropping low, “I never would’ve taken you for a pill popper.”

I waited.

Kellie laughed. “What?”

“That blue pill over there. I saw that same bag earlier today, except there was a second pill with it. That’s a seriously strong antipsychotic medication. Do you have—”

“No! Shut up.”

There. Right there.

That was the first break for us. Kellie just broke, just a little bit.

“That has nothing to do with you,” she kept on, some panic rising in her voice. “I helped you out and told you exactly how to destroy this girl’s life. Now it’s your turn. I want into your roommate’s computer. I’ll come over to your dorm tomorrow and—”

“You know what, Kel?” Maren bit out, letting her resentment slip through.

It was my turn.

Maren was saying as she opened the door, “I figure let’s ask the source herself.”

And there the fuck I was.

I smiled, stepping into the room.

Blood drained from Kellie’s face.

I held up my phone, letting her see the screen, and I hit end before sending the entire video to Troy.

“Wha—what are you doing here? What was on your phone?”

I said, “Thanks for all of that.”

She swallowed, her eyes jerking between Maren and me. “What are you up to?” Her face grew dark, anger filling it. “If you even think of fucking with me—”

I held up my hand, stopping her. “One second, please.”

Maren burst out laughing.

I was watching my phone, waiting to get the alert from Troy, and a moment later, it came through. I turned my attention back to Kellie and smiled widely again. “They were already hearing everything, but I needed to send them the file so they could pull what they needed from it.”

“What?” Reality was starting to set in, and she stumbled back a step. Her voice was hoarse.

“Yeah.” I took another step toward her, dropping my voice too. But I sounded hard instead. Unrelenting. “We needed audio bites for the article.”
