“If you think so,” he replied holding up another photo of something that looked like a bowl.
“Well, I have been practicing some simple spells with Sarah. She’s a sucker for love. I’m sure she’ll help me with a spell to…gently push Kristin and Shawn together.”
“Sounds good, babe.”
I squealed and threw my arms around him. “I’m so glad you agree and you’re on board with me using magick for this!”
Turning, I jumped off the bed and rushed out of the bedroom to grab my cell phone. I had some planning I needed to do.
“Wait, what did you say?” Lucas called after me. “You’re using magick for what?”
“Just study your picture, sweetheart! I’ve got this!”
Picking up my cell, I hit my sister’s phone number.
“Hey, what’s up?”
“Okay, so I spoke with Lucas, and he is in total agreement on this. I want to put a spell on Kristin and Shawn.”
My sister let out an overly dramatic sigh. “Okay, do we have to go over the rules again, Hollie? You can’t just run around putting spells on people!”
“I know that! I only want a simple little spell to kind of push them together. They’re both crushing on each other, Sarah. It’s like I’m looking in a mirror at me and Lucas from a few months ago.”
There was a silence before she asked, “Did you ask Kristin and Shawn if you could put a spell on them?”
When I didn’t answer, she laughed. “Why am I not surprised?”
“Come on, Sarah! Hold on, let me find my good witch’s guidebook.”
“I told Lucy not to give that to you!”
I giggled as I flipped through the book.
“Found them! Okay, we can use the notice me spell, which is what I thought I was using on Lucas, but that still turned out in my favor. Have I mentioned how hot the sex is? You really should use this spell, Sarah.”
“I’m going to ignore everything you just said,” my sister stated dryly.
“Then we have the ‘Small-Shell Love Charm.’ Ohhhh…this one sounds good!”
“No, you need Kristin or Shawn to do that spell, Hollie.”
Pouting, I replied, “Right. Right. Okay, then I’ll do the notice me spell. I just need a picture of Shawn.”
“Oh, God, what have I done? Hollie, I don’t think you should do either spell. You cannot mess with free will…remember?”
“I know! I’m not. I’m simply trying to get the two of them to get their heads out of their asses.”
Sarah let out a low growl. “Listen to me, Hollie. To do the notice me spell, you need to have Kristin do it, not you.”
“Can’t I just use their names and pictures?”
When she didn’t answer, I fist-pumped. “I can! Perfect! How do I do that?”
“Hollie,” Sarah warned in that annoying mother voice of hers. “You cannot do it. The last thing you need to be doing is messing around with spells. Lucy already told you that your gift is very powerful. Look at what happened to Lucas.”
I flinched. My spell to get Lucas to notice me had gone all wrong, and I had ended up putting a hex on him instead. I still felt terrible about it.
“That won’t happen again. I’ve already learned so much from you and Lucy. Besides, you’ll help me to make sure I do it right. Right?”
“Wrong. I will not help you.”
Instead of letting my anger get the better of me, another idea popped into my head. I needed to throw my sister off my scent.
Letting out a sigh, I put forth my best acting skills. “You’re right. I got carried away.”
“Wait, you’re giving up on this way too easily. What are you up to, Hollie Craft?”
Laughing, I replied, “Jeesh, thanks so much for having confidence in me.”
“I know you, Hollie. And I know you’re not going to let this go.”
Before she could lecture me anymore, I called out, “Coming! Hey, Lucas needs me. We’ll chat later!”
“Hollie, wait!”
“Toodles!”
Hitting End, I smiled and hit my mother’s number and waited for her to answer.
“Sweetheart, I’ve been expecting your call.”
Grinning like a fool, I blurted out, “I need your help with a spell.”
I could almost hear her nodding. “Tomorrow, nine in the morning.”
“I’ll be there!”
Hollie
“How did you learn what all of this stuff does?” I asked as I leaned down and smelled some lavender in my mother’s greenhouse.
“I learned it from my mother who learned it from her mother. And so on.”
Sliding onto a stool, I watched as my mother moved about in her happy space. I realized she was totally in her element. How had I never noticed it before?
“Was it hard, hiding who you really were from me?”
Pausing, she turned to face me. “At times. I always believed that when you were ready, you’d find your gift.”
I smiled, then frowned. “What if…? What if I don’t know how to use it? I mean, I answer people before they even ask a question or make a comment. Some don’t pay any attention to it. Other people look at me like I’m some kind of weirdo. And the last couple of weeks, I’ve seen things in my head before they even happen.”
