Prologue
George
May 24th, 2010
My eyes pop open at the banging on my bedroom door. I sit up, disoriented and groggy. I feel like I just went to bed. I look over at my clock. It’s seven in the morning. The ball ended at five, if not later.
“Enter!” I shout. This better be good. I am surprised to see Roland, the Royal Steward, entering my bedroom and standing at the foot of my bed. “What’s going on?”
“Your father is dead, Your Majesty,” the steward says, bowing deeply. He’s woken me up from a deep sleep, so this doesn’t make any sense. He was fine when I saw him at supper during the ball my parents held for independence day. What could have happened since then? My mind races with the implications of his statement. I, George the Second, ascended the throne of Uskia at the ridiculous age of thirteen. Thirteen. There will be no one to help me do this. The law states that I am an absolute ruler. I am all alone now. Nothing will ever be the same again.
“What happened?” I demand.
“He died in his chamber with your mother,” he states matter of factly.
“Did she kill him?” I ask. My parents hate each other so much that I wouldn’t put it past either one of them. My mother is a saint, though. How she puts up with my father’s flagrant cheating is beyond me.
“In a manner of speaking,” he says glumly.
“Oh? Oh!” I reply. Gross. So much for hate, but they never did get their spare, so I guess it makes sense.
“I, Roland, Steward of Uskia, do hereby swear steadfast fealty to King George, the second, the one true king of Uskia. I make this vow before God, and therefore it can only be ended by death.”
“I accept this fealty and will cherish it all the days of my reign,” I reply as per custom.
I was bred for this. I thought I’d have more time. “Leave me. Tell my mother I’ll be to see her as soon as I dress.”
“Shall I send for your valet?” he asks, starting to pick up my clothes from last night.
“I don’t have one, but you don’t have to do that. I’ll get it.” He knows that I don’t have a valet. He knows everything about this household. That is literally his job.
“You’ll do no such thing, Your Majesty and of course you have a valet. Moncrieff will serve as your valet unless you’d like to find your own.”
“No. Moncrieff will be fine; I just don’t need him right now. I need a moment, you understand?” I ask because this is all too much, but there is no way in hell I’m going to say that.
“Of course, Your Majesty,” he says, bowing out of my bedroom. My father had only been king for six months. My grandfather died not long ago as well. My grandmother and mother will be looking for my guidance, though I am technically a child; men rule the roost in Uskia. I am now the head of my family as well as the king. Suddenly, the weight of my subjects, all 970,375 of them, is on my shoulders.
This is a responsibility that I wasn’t ready for, not by a long shot, but there is no room for error. Even if it kills me, I will lead my people into the future. I have been preparing for this role for as long as I can remember. Every lesson, every council meeting, as well as everything my grandfather and father taught, runs through my head as I mindlessly take a shower and put on a black suit. The country is still mourning my grandfather. This is too much change in such a short amount of time. I know the people of Uskia can handle it in stride, but can I?
I leave my room and head down the hallway toward my parent’s room. My father is still lying in his bed. I’d say he was sleeping peacefully if I didn't know better. I can hear my mother sobbing in her dressing room, so I head there first.
“Mama?” I call after knocking on the door.
“Come in,” she says. I open the door and find her staring at my father’s clothes on his side of the room. She turns and drops into a deep curtsey in front of me. “I, Althena, dowager queen of Uskia, do hereby swear steadfast fealty to King George, the Second, the one true king of Uskia. I make this vow before God, and therefore it can only be ended by death.”
“I accept this fealty and will cherish it all the days of my reign. Please stand, Mama,” I say, going over to her. She stands and pulls me into a hug.
“You’ll have to make the announcement. Gran and I will be by your side,” she says, drying her tears.
