ONE

Watching Serena’s perfect little ass clad in nothing but high-dollar underwear walking down the hall didn’t excite me as it once had. That was when I knew for sure that I’d changed. I hadn’t asked for it, but death has a way of changing a person. I was no exception.

“Mitchell. Are you just going to watch me or what?” she asked, looking over her shoulder, sporting a smirk.

There was a twinkle in her eye that should have sparked desire. I felt nothing. “I’ve got work.” I turned away and hoped like hell she’d get the message. I wasn’t up for a messy confrontation.

“Work?” The half laugh that died in her throat was a sure sign she wasn’t giving up without a fight. “I’m not doing something right if you want to work.”

“Let’s just call it a night.” Though I wasn’t facing her, I dropped my head, praying by some miracle she would leave without calling me names to put me in my place.

The slap of feet and the smell of her perfume getting closer forced a sigh from my chest. I waited for her to reach me. It was as I thought. She wore a spiteful frown I would pay for.

“What is going on with you?” she snapped. She’d refused a graceful exit. Now was the time for honesty. Only she didn’t give me a chance. “I know things are fine at the firm because Daddy told me so.” That was right. Her father was essentially my boss. “If this is about you making partner, that takes time.”

“It isn’t about work,” I admitted.

“Then what?”

“I’m thinking about taking time off and going home.”

“Why would you do something silly like that?” The utter bafflement on her face was confirmation of an understanding that wasn’t between us. “Go back to Mason Prairie?”

“Creek, not Prairie,” I corrected. There wasn’t a Mason Prairie.

She waved a hand. “Whatever. What are you going to do there? Be a small-town lawyer?”

I hadn’t actually considered that, and she hadn’t heard me. “I need to see my father and help my brother with the ranch,” I said, even though she didn’t deserve an explanation.

Her eyes turned cold, yet I cared little. “For how long?”

As I looked out the picture window at the Chicago skyline, I shrugged. “I haven’t taken a day off since I started at the firm. I’m due some time.”

“Are you coming back to Chicago? Who will handle your clients?”

She wasn’t my boss, but she sure as hell felt she had a right to my answers. “I’ll handle my clients. I can work from anywhere.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Are you planning on poaching clients and starting your own firm?”

I gave her the stone-cold eyes she’d given me. “The apt word is ‘mine.’ I brought the clients with me.”

“With your brother's influence.”

There was the rub. My brother played in the MLB and was my first client. But she was wrong. “My brother opened a few doors, but it was my work that kept them and brought others. And before you dig yourself in a deeper hole, my contract says any clients I bring can go with me if they want to. And if you were listening, you would have heard that I see this as temporary. What isn’t temporary is us. We’re done.”

“Done?” she snapped.

“You knew what this was when it began. We both said we weren’t looking for anything more than a good time. It’s no longer a good time.”

It wasn’t as if I wasn’t capable of love. I’d fallen in love a few times in my lifetime. But when my mother died, the piece of me capable of loving anyone new had died with her.

Serena aimed a sharply pointed nail in my direction. “That’s fine. Daddy wanted me to work on getting the Royal brothers as full-time clients. All three are single and rich.”

If she’d thought I would be jealous, I wasn’t. “Sounds like a plan.”

Her mouth fell open a second before it snapped shut. “You asshole. You’re a bigger bastard than your brother.”
